INTRODUCTION

As the Women's Empowerment Programme is working to educate women about the benefits of savings, the WEG groups have started saving projects and have utilized the savings in purposeful ways.

The Women's Empowerment Groups (WEGs) each have a savings group through which many women are enabled to start small businesses as well as able to use the savings for covering household expenses, buying livelihood, and for paying health bills.

why we think it's important?

Through the WEG  Programme we simply want to equip women to have financial skills that will help them develop economically and enable to raise the standards of living.

WOMEN AND SMALL BUSINESSES

Phula Ram is a village in rural Sindh where a group of women were saving money to buy a bull. They bought the bull in 12000 rupees, after which they took care of it for a few months and later on sold it for 55000 rupees.

The 55000 rupees was distributed among the group who used it for many purposes. Some are following:

Rani bought bed sheets for her home and helped her daughter Shunita to get medical treatment.

Kanwari bought a pack of cloth material and sold the clothes after stitching.

There is another village in Mirpurkhas where one of the WEG members named Rani along with daughter in-law have opened a small shop of sweets. Through the income of the shop Rani and Shanti are able to manage their expenses very well.
